Melanie Nocher

IRISH RETIRED SWIMMER – FORMER DOUBLE OLYMPIAN

Melanie was an Irish swimming champion. She competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the women’s 100 metre and 200m backstroke. She won a bronze medal at the European Short Course Championships 2012 and was Irish National Champion six times before she was 19.

Melanie began competing for Ireland at junior level in 2001 and senior level in 2003. Competing for both Ireland and Northern Ireland at World, European and Commonwealth Championships.

Melanie is still an Irish Record Holder in 3 events.

Melanie journey to qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics was covered in a documentary called “It’s Not The Taking Park” aired by Setanta Sports in 2012.

After retiring from competitive swimming Melanie has since been passionate about getting involved with numerous other sporting projects. The main being the Swim for a Mile initiative set up by Swim Ireland to get the nation swimming. Melanie has been an ambassador since the project began in 2015 and now helps deliver swim clinics in the run up to the event which had to be postponed last year due to covid.

Commentating on swimming events such as the Irish Nationals and Junior Championships has become a firm favourite for Melanie and to see the next generation of talent come up has been really exciting to watch.

Melanie is also been a member of the Olympic Federation of Ireland Athletes Commission since 2016, the work of the Athletes’ Commission is to ensure that athletes are empowered to participate in and advise on decision making structures and have a voice on all key matters affecting Olympic athletes.

18 celebrity recruits in including Silver Hatch Sports Melanie Nocher take part in a gruelling special forces selection course designed by former members of Ireland’s elite Special Forces unit, the Army Ranger Wing (ARW). To date two groups of civilians have taken on RTÉ’s Ultimate Hell Week challenge, now it’s the turn of the professionals, as eighteen well known personalities from the world of sports and entertainment attempt to pass the Hell Week course. With a failure rate upwards of 90%, only the toughest candidates will survive!

“My Olympic journey was amazing, but painful as well,” Melanie Nocher says, adding: “I was very young, I was only 20.” It’s over a decade since the Down native first competed at the Olympic Games — 2008 in Beijing to be precise. She is clearly in a far different place now, as indicated by the baby that occasionally interrupts our conversation and the new house she has just moved into.
