IRISH BOXER

EUROPEAN & EUROPEAN UNION AMATEUR CHAMPION

Kurt was a World and European Youth medallist in 2012 and 2013 respectively and won bronze at the 2017 European Championships. In 2018 he took silver at Commonwealth Games and gold at theEU Championships.

In 2019 he won gold at the European Games, all at bantamweight (56kg). He had an exceptionally tough 2020, beaten in the Olympic Qualifiers in March before his daughter Layla (now 1) was born very prematurely and spent three months in hospital.

He qualified for Tokyo through the BTF ranking system as the second ranked featherweight in Europe.

Kurt Walker came agonisingly close to securing Ireland’s second boxing medal of these Olympic Games, but was beaten in today’s featherweight quarter-final on a 3-2 split decision by American Duke Reagan. Walker lost the first round on all five judges’ scorecards, though upped the intensity and boxed clever to win the the second round on three scorecards, with the remaining two marking that round all square.

Kurt Walker’s Olympic journey continues after a remarkable performance against Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov of Uzbekistan in their featherweight last 16 bout saw him claim a split decision victory. The Lisburn boxer was not overawed against the gold medal favourite and fought bravely throughout. Four of the judges gave Walker the first round after he demonstrated good footwork and terrific movement from the off.

Kurt Walker was short on words this morning but that was alright given he had done all his talking in the ring. The Lisburn featherwight is through to an Olympic quarter-final after producing a career-best display to eliminate top-seed Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov. A sizable pre-fight underdog against the reigning world champion, Walker delivered a sensational performance to prevail via split decision on four scores of 29-28, and one of 27-30.

Tokyo 2020: Kurt Walker gets Ireland’s boxers off to a winning start
Boxing began its Olympic schedule with good news from Tokyo’s Kokugikan Arena, where Kurt Walker came through his preliminary round of 32 in the men’s featherweight competition. Walker won on a unanimous decision against Spain’s Jose Quiles Brotons, all five judges siding with the Lisburn boxer and 2017 European champion. Crisp and athletic from the beginning, Walker fought from a distance and even though the Spaniard, nicknamed ‘Crazy Horse’, came out more aggressively by eating up Walker’s lead in the second round, the 26-year-old Irishman held his composure and steadied himself nicely to win the third round.

Tokyo Olympics: Kurt Walker ready to seize the moment following one-year delay
Kurt Walker insists he is ready to seize the moment after waiting an extra year to make his Olympics bow. The Lisburn featherweight will make his debut at the Tokyo Games in the early hours of Saturday morning when he faces Spain’s Quiles Brotons in the last-32. If the Olympics had gone ahead as planned last year then Walker would have missed out on his dream. The 26-year-old suffered a shock defeat in the qualifiers in March 2020, just two days before the shutters went down on the London tournament due of the onset of Covid-19.

‘I didn’t know what was going to happen with boxing or the Olympics, I didn’t really care either’
This time last year Kurt Walker could never have imagined himself inside Tokyo’s Olympic Village, counting down the days until a lifelong dream would be fulfilled. Indeed, boxing and the Olympic Games were the furthest thing from his mind. There were a couple of runs here and there, but not a single punch had been thrown in anger since March 16, 2020. That was the dramatic final night of the European qualifier in London – delayed after that session – when Walker knew all he had to do was beat Hamsat Shadalov to seal his spot at Tokyo 2020.
