2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES SILVER MEDAL

Daniel Wiffen is an Irish Olympic Swimmer who holds all 8 Irish National records in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle (Long Course and Short Course, Junior, and Senior).

Daniel is the highest ranked swimmer in Ireland.

He now trains with other international Olympic athletes in the prestigious distance training squad in Loughborough where he also studies Computer Science.

Daniel was born in Leeds and moved to Northern Ireland when he was 2 years old. He is an Irish Citizen with dual citizenship (including the UK) and has represented Ireland at multiple international events including the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021.

Daniel is also a part-time actor and has been in shows such as Game of Thrones, Frankenstein Chronicles, and CBBC dramas.

Daniel Wiffen Clocks Irish National Record For 1500 Free Silver
The men’s 1500m freestyle was one of the marquis events of this final night of competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Although Sam Short of Australia ultimately took the win in a new personal best of 14:48.54 tonight in Birmingham, silver was captured by Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen in a new PB of his own. Stopping the clock in a time of 14:51.79, 21-year-old Wiffen joined Short in punching the only other sub-15:00 time of the field. Wiffen’s time here overtook his own previous lifetime best and Irish national record of 14:57.66 he logged in Budapest at this year’s World Championships.

Bethany Firth and Daniel Wiffen claim swimming golds for Northern Ireland at Commonwealth Games
Bethany Firth and Daniel Wiffen crowned an outstanding week for Northern Ireland in the pool as swimming came to a close at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this evening. Wiffen was racing in the 1500m Freestyle Final where he took almost six seconds off his Irish Record to win silver. Wiffen had only broken 15 minutes for the first time at the World Championships in June in 14:57.66. Tonight, the 21-year-old swam 14:51.79 to finish just behind Australia’s Sam Short in 14:48.54.

Wiffen Just Shy Of C’Wealth Games Podium But Lowers Irish 400 Free Record
While competing on the first night of finals of these 2022 Commonwealth Games, 21-year-old Daniel Wiffen lowered an Irish national record for the 2nd time today. Already having checked in with a new lifetime best and Irish standard of 3:47.43 in the men’s 400m free out of the heats, Wiffen stepped things up tonight to ultimately finish in an even quicker time of 3:46.62 in the medal race. Entering this meet, Wiffen held the Irish record at 3:48.75, meaning the man who trains at Loughborough has sliced over 2 seconds off of his 400m free PB over the course of his two Commonweawlth Games swims.

Daniel Wiffen makes history and shows world class as the first Irish swimmer to go under 15 minutes in 1500 metres
Daniel Wiffen leaves Budapest having undoubtedly proved that he is a world class performer and the summer has only started for the Armagh man. The 20-year-old followed up making the 800m freestyle final at the World championships with ninth fastest in the 1500m free heats yesterday and, most significantly, became the first Irish swimmer to break the 15-minute mark with a time of 14:57.66. The time was almost five seconds better than his old Irish record and left him only 0.78 away from the final. Tokyo Olympian Wiffen, first took the Irish Record in December 2020.
