PHILIP LAVERY - IRISH CYCLIST
As a youth cyclist Lavery was a triple all Ireland track champion and a member of the Olympic development team. 2010 has seen him victorious both home and abroad, finishing top of the overall classifications in the Tour of the North, Jimmy Lally Memorial and Traders Cup as well as the Wervik, Ramsdonk (Elite U23) and Lanskouter (Elite U23) in Europe. He was also a stage winner in the Tour of Ulster in May, taking the U23 classification, and he recently had a notable Rás, holding onto the County jersey for a number of days.
Lavery raced with An Post-Sean Kelly throughout the latter half of 2010 as a trainee and impressed sufficiently to earn a full contract this year. His most notable result last year was a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games as part of the Northern Ireland team pursuit quartet on the track. He also won two stages and the overall in the Tour of the North by attacking with more than 110km to go on the final stage to wipe out a deficit of 1′18″, eventually winning by a narrow 18 seconds.
I certainly have no illusions about the difficulties to be faced and overcome but I will succeed I still have the love of bike racing found following my brother and my dad around Ireland to their races when i was younger and as long as that interest is there I wont stop.
